|
I start off by killing the 2 tiger ads that come with the boss then I attack Lor'khan first.
Now before I go into details, there are a few things about Lor'khan and her heals.
Firstly, she wil only cast her heal if an ally is below 50%, once someone is below 50%, she can decide to heal.
Lor'khan wil only heal other allies when she is above 50%. In otherwords, if she is lower then 50%, she wil cast the heal on herself always, even if Thekal or Zath have only 10% of there total hitpoints left.
Lor'khans heal has a long enough cooldown that wil nver outheal your DPS on all 3 of them unless you really have bad luck with RNG.
When Lor'khan is casting her heal, she cannot die. Even if she casts her heal on 1% while nuking her, she simply won't die and finish the cast (unless you interupt the cast).
I nuke Lor'khan down as low as possible, I use intimidation on the first heal, I nuke her carefully even more down. When she starts casting again, i nuke her til she has 0% hitpoints left. This wil make sure the next heal, wil be cast on her. I focus then on Zath and take him low. I swith back to lor'khan as soon as she finished casting her heal. Lower her hitpoints back to a low value. Once she is back in check, It's Thekals turn. Repeat the entire process until Thekal/Zath are between 10 to 20%. I focus on Lor'khan and take her out first, then zath, then Thekal. And P2 starts the easy tank&spank part.
I'm using this method for a very long time. It requires abit of practice at first. A usual kill time is arround 5 minutes. It takes longer if you have bad RNG with some abilities (example: you are silenced when she is casting her heal. Silence make sure you cant cast intimidation)
note: the time it takes to do the entire encounter, not yust P1.
I use a BM spec with all the talents that benefits my pet, my build doesn't have aimed shot.

Small Update:
Did Onyxia today on first try and it was rather easy.
Onyxia's Lair
Onyxia (Medium, soloed): I used a ferocity Devilsaur pet for the self heal, pet had 17.6k health and 19k armor. I used Feign Death near the whelplings to avoid Deep Breath and the fireballs and I stayed around 90% of the fight that way. The self heal is enough to keep your pet up in P1 without any heal and in P2 without any heal, only once health became critical when too many whelplings spawned. Send your pet on the whelplings and then on Onyxia till she goes into P3. I even didn't bother to do damage in P3.
On a different note: My Pet was able to tank Doom Lord Kazzak without any trouble so a 2-man team, hunter and healer, can easily do him and get 500g and more. I also tanked Doomwalker but this fight is harder, frequent threat resets and stacking Sunder Armor make this fight harder. You need someone to taunt off your pet untit the Sunder Armor runs out. Sunder Armor can reduce the armor of your pet up to 100%. You can probably taunt off yourself and have your healer heal through and then use Feign Death or use a Paladin healer for the taunt. Doomwalker should also be possible by 2 people. Doom Lord Kazzak could possibly be done by 1 hunter but I haven't tried it yet.
The Silverback ability in 3.1 will definetly open up new areas for us.

MC:
Baron Geddon (Easy solo):
Spec: bm/surv standard bm tanking talents with the extended range so you can dps at 41yds(just outside the range of a lot abilities)
Gear: I used 2 piece t5 but it isnt necessary if you get the positioning good.
Kill Location: Baron pats around a decent sized area but you will use your pet to pull him into the hallway before the area he pats around.
Strat: Stand in the hallway before the area in which baron pats, you will want your pet to tank at the turn so stand farther down the hallway out of range. *Tip - stand extra far away and run up after pull so you can make sure not to get the dot or explosion. A range finding addon is helpful for this* Use Eye of the Beast and walk your pet into the area baron pats between groups (if you havent cleared them) and just growl when he runs by. If done correctly you will only get him. Once your pet is back to the corner of the tunnel put it on stay if it isnt and cancel Eye of the Beast. Now stand at 41yds and dps and mend when needed.
Tips: sometimes your pet can get out of position a bit and may cause it to be out of range of the standard mend pet range. If this happens, try using passive to reposition your pet back to the stay location. If still unsuccessful, you can use eye of the beast. Baron doesnt hit too hard so with a constant application of mend pet during the fight its easy to catch when your pet is out of range and fix the problem without much danger of the pet dying.
Good luck and hope for that Binding
*Edited with a safer way to handle pet being out of range safer.

Just solo'd Onyxia and thought I would add my two cents in. I used my usual Raptor, just respecced for more dodge and survivability. I probably didn't need to bother, but I grabbed Heart of the Phoenix and Lick Your Wounds just in case, but never had to use them. I think next time I will just spec into more damage instead.
As someone else stated, Bloodthirsty was more than enough to keep it alive most of the time. I had to mend once on P1 when a breath wasn't resisted. Pet was at 60% but probably would have recovered regardless. I didn't want to risk it though. In P2 just Explosive/Volley the initial big whelp spawn then FD in the side cavern entrance to avoid Deep Breath. Manually send your pet on whelps that slowly spawn on either side to keep them from piling up. Your FD will run out, so use that time to DPS Ony, clear up any extra whelps and bandage/change stance to viper if Mana is low. Otherwise the pet can Bloodthirst through the damage with no issue.
My Raptor was at 14k hps and 19k armor. I used a spec I would change that is 58/13.. I could drop improved revive though. The 13 is Lethal 5/Mortal 3 and GftT 2. I would drop Imp. Revive and max Mortal this time around, but since my damage was only a fraction of the pet it wouldn't help the fight really.
My gear is pretty high-end PvE stuff, no T5 or anything odd. My PvP gear sucks so I didn't use it either.
I'd imagine anyone could do this fight at 80 in quest blues, and maybe even less.
And further goofing around in ZG, I can only reiterate what others have said. Bat/Snake boss are a joke. I couldn't down raptor or tiger, but I didn't try Bloodlord much. Was getting tired by that point. Tiger boss I got close a few times, but I just couldn't keep my pet up well enough. Imp. Revive came in real handy on my best attempts, but some tries he never got stunned, and he died quick and others he got stunned a lot and I couldn't bandage fast enough. I brought my gorilla in for stomp (obsolete in 3.1) to help control the adds better and this was better than the raptor, but missing the selfheal was noticeable. I think 2pc. t5 would make this fight much more trivial. Mandokir would probably be the same way, allowing you to heal through his enrage after killing the raptor.. otherwise I couldn't keep up - even with last stand. If I ignored the raptor then the debuff would eventually overtake me. I refused to bug him out and only tried a few times though.

To be honest I somewhat rely on my pet getting stunned on Tiger boss. The reason is I always stand at least 25 yards away, and when he gets stunned I allow them to run all the way to me before I FD so my pet gets a few unmitigated ticks of mend pet to bring its health back up to (or close to) 100%. Damage can get a bit spiky every now and then depending on how your pet is positioned (even with 2 set T5) so those few seconds can make a big difference in how easy the fight is.

Ironically, the only boss i cant solo in ZG (apart from Jindo for obvious reasons) is the bat boss :p
Using 53/13/5 spec and a bear pet (so dont even depend on thunderstomp at this point, next patch will give me Stomp + Swipe) and 2xt5 (more of a convenience i guess, but i would almost say mandatory to have 2xt5, not just for the healing itself, but for the mana you save on Mend Pet and as such less time in AotV and more dps, etc)
Snake boss: i wont waste too many words on this, just dispell the HoT, and move your pet out of the poison in p2
Mandokir: have your pet tank Mandokir at bottom of his stairs, yourself standing on the middle level of his temple (jump from the roof or stairs). This way the raptor will go into evade mode since you are healing your pet. Mandokir will never enrage cause you dont kill the pet; Mandokir will never charge you, since he is incapable of doing this, and as such he wont fear you or your pet at all. It all comes down to a simple tank and spank fight.
Tiger boss: dont worry about draining the healers mana or interupting the heals. Her heals are on a long cooldown, just outdamage it. Bring all 3 priests down to low hp, the healer last. Finish them off, p2 speaks for itself.
Spider boss: again nothing complicated here, there is quite a bit of damage on you though, i use Roar of Sacrifice on myself constantly here and bandage whenever she has just spit some poison on me and DoT has run out. She is one of the harder bosses for me coz of the moderate amount of damage, and the aggro reset when webbing pet. For that last reason i pretty much hug my pet.
Panther boss: by far the hardest boss for me to solo in ZG, but its possible. Bang the gong, nuke the crap out of boss before she despawns. Use Roar of Sacrifice whenever possible. Be very careful with when to use FD, and always use AotV just before you FD, you ll need the mana (volley costs alot :P ). Generally i FD right after she despawns, let bear finish off the remaining panthers (i guess gorilla would have easier job here :p ). Note: when you FD after she despawns, the panthers will still spawn, but will stay in their pens; when you stand up when boss appears again, ALL of them will come for you: use volley + explosive trap. I might have to change my tactics on this boss, i actually do already from time to time; it all comes down to improvising i guess. There are advantages to not using FD at all and just kill the panters, ill have to finetune this fight i guess. But for me it remains the hardest fight in there to solo.
Bat boss: at this point its impossible for me to solo (i know...). Reasons: damage output not high enough to counter the heals, even when specced for Aimed Shot. The only pet with an interupt atm has a 1 min cooldown on it, so not an option either (next patch gorilla might change that ofc). Only way for me to do her would be to spec for silencing shot i guess, but i cba with that. Besides she isnt really important for me.
Fish boss (Gazh ranka whats his name): tank and spank fight, occasionally resets threat, just be ready for that and you ll kill it. I reckon the turtle poly book he drops will sell for quite a bit, but meh ill have to wait and see :p
Hakkar: with only one aspect alive in my case, the bat boss, he becomes a trivial tank and spank fight. Pet is immune to his MC, and so are you since you are ranged ofc. With bat boss alive, all he does is an AoE silence (omg a silenced hunter, what can he possibly do!? ) and his shadowbolt thingy which hits for shite (use RoS on this). Easy fight.
Jindo: impossible, he WILL mind control you within 10 seconds, you cant control your pet at this point, so you basically have to watch you and boss ganking your pet while more and more totems spawn. Simply impossible to solo, at any lvl of gear, at any level, by any class.
AQ20 (same spec, same bear):
Kurinaxx: Fun fight, it comes down to a tank and spank with a few twists: you have to keep moving to avoid the sand traps, and stay away from pet (doh!) so he wont get the sand traps either (boss only casts it on you anyway). The stacking debuff on pet only becomes a problem when its -50% healing taken or worse. Solution: use distracting shot on boss, use RoS on yourself, wait for boss to put one stack of the debuff on you, then FD. Stacks on pet will reset and you can carry on. At 35% he will frenzy, but shouldnt be a problem, just continue what you were doing, taunting boss when stacks on pet become too high.
Rajaxx: 8 waves are relatively easy, boss (nearly) impossible. The explosion Rajaxx does deals damage equal to about 50% of your total hp, regardless of lvl. It can be resisted, but dont count on it. Perhaps its possible in NR gear, but havent bothered with that ><. It would probably mean you d have to the 8 waves in NR too coz i dont think you get ooc between waves and boss, but not sure, and FD wont work either i think, it being a bossfight.
Buru: only had one try on this, seems possible, but very hard to do. Eggs have 25k hp and you still need to destroy them to get Buru down. Your pet cant tank Buru due to a stacking debuff which does enormous damage. Again, only had one try on him, not gonna bother with him for now.
Moam: easy fight, his mana drain is a joke, but i keep viper sting on him to be sure (when he turns to stone he regens massive amounts of mana anyway, and i havent seen what an explosion does to me at this lvl, i dont intend to find out either :P ). Tank and spank, in p2 just kill the adds (which are immune to arcane shot btw, but np).
Ossirian: tried tanking him in Godmode, its *almost* possible. With next patch giving some more bonuses to healing (Mend pet glyph, more hp on pet, Silverback talent) it might be possible. I wouldnt recommend trying to kite him to crystals, it becomes to complicated to do it solo, as he still does knockbacks on you and pet, and he casts those vortexes that stun you.
Ayamiss: impossible, simply not possible without any form of self heal, and she ll sacrifice you; your pet is barely capable of killing the worm in time, but its possible. The damage she does on you will kill you though :P
Molten Core:
Lucifron and Magmadar are np, its the corehound packs around them that are a pain, havent found a way to solo those yet.
Only 2 bosses in there i can actually solo: Geddon and Shazzrah.
I pull them both in that corridor between Geddon's room and Garr's room.
Shazzrah: tank and spank, stand far away from boss. When he teleports just hold dps (aggro dump), let pet grab it, and continue dps. I also think if you stand far away enough (im Hawk Eye specced for Geddon, read below) he might not even teleport, but not sure about this yet.
Geddon: spec Hawk Eye, otherwise not possible. Do a pet pull, bring Geddon back and start tanking him. ALWAYS make sure pet is between you and boss, this can be a pain since pet has the tendency of trying to change his position, especially during Hellfires. I guess it aint the end of the world if your pet does get out of range for Mend Pet, but i didnt want to take any chances. I wouldnt recommend running in range to heal pet, even during Hellfire (as TheeRambo suggested 2 days ago); he can cast bomb on you too during Hellfire, probably the mana burn debuff as well. Essentially a tank and spank fight as well, just dont get the bomb or mana burn. Btw, on wowhead you can find the actual spells Geddon does, it has a 45 yrd range; but this is measured from the centre of his hitbox ofc, you are further than 45 yards away from his centre, even though you can shoot arrows from 41 yards to him.
On a final note: I soloed Geddon for the first time this week, binding dropped o_O. Got a druid in to duo rest of MC, Garr dropped his binding (WTF? O_o). Anyway, happy me, got all the mats TF in one day, bindings included ><. No Raptor mount yet though
Edit: forgot about Sulfuron somehow ><
He can be soloed too, you have no chance in hell of interupting the heals ofc, and you cant drag them away from each others, since its just....you :P
Solution: drain their mana, and keep dmg up, make them heal each other so they go oom (they actually wont be able to heal anymore at this point). Its an endurance fight basically, and one of those fights where 2xt5 is really mandatory. High dmg output --> more healing on pet + adds going oom faster

While he will MC you, I wouldn't make a false statement such as "impossible to solo". Unless it's been hotfixed recently (doubtful), when Jindo mind controls the only target, he does not reset his HP. Although it would be significantly more challenging and time consuming as a hunter, a tank (or possibly healer) class can easily beat Jindo.

Just drain her mana (~30k) and start low DPS. This way your pet will gain a huge headstart on aggro.
Whenever the small bats come, I just FD and they despawn. Alternatively, you can walk beneath your pet and let it aggro them (Gorilla or wait for 3.1).
When she is oom, I usually take her down to about 40-45% life and go into a viper-phase to regain full mana (constantly keeping viper sting on).
At about 40% the bat-bomb-squad joins the fight. This is why I refilled my mana before to unload all I got and nuke her down.
It may surely take some time, but it's a very simple fight.

Very true, I have soloed him several times on my Enhancement Shaman. In fact he is silly easy. The reason is that when you get MCed you get full health back. Even a Warrior or Rogue could solo this guy easily. I suppose a Hunter with a big nasty twohander could go into melee with him without the pet out. But I wonder how long that would take.

Dont forget the healing totems, healing for quite a considerable amount.
And ill try your tactic Belzi, i guess i rush through p1 too quickly, i do know already the bats despawn when you FD (similarly panthers stop leaving their pen at Panther boss when you FD); although iv read and heard from several ppl she will heal even with 0% mana?

While I agree this boss in't important, I'm confused about the assertion. Why not use viper sting to first drain her mana, then take her out?

Another Update:
ZG
Ghaz'ranke (Easy, soloed): Did him today, one of the easiest bosses ever. You'll have more trouble fishing him up. Just DPS him, no need for T5, use Feign Death when he knocks up your pet.
On a different topic. I've been going over equip that could improve me and my pet recently and found some nice trinkets that could boost pets or make encounters a little easier.
1. I was trying to get Commendation of Kael'thas, the +57 stamina trinket, to get my pet past the 21k hp self-buffed when Vial of the Sunwell dropped. Vial of the Sunwell is the healing trinket that builds up stacks for an instant heal and has mana reg. Mend Pet currently allows to build up stacks with this trinket so you essentially gain a trinket that can heal you every 2 minutes and has some nice mana reg.
2. The second trinket drops in AQ40. I was going over AQ40 loot when it suddenly came to me. The Petrified Scarab is a trinket that drops from the 3 Bugs. The trinket increases your magic resistance by 100 for 1 minute and for every spell you get hit by it reduces the resistance by 10. Well the thing is your pet gets hit not you so the full effect should stick the full minute.
3. The third trinket drops also in AQ40 from Viscidus. The Scarab Brooch provides your heals for 30 seconds with a 15% shield. This is essentially a trinket that can boost your pet heals. With 3.1 your Ment Pet will be able to heal for around 2.4k per tick which would transfer into a ~360 shield per tick.
I was not able to try out trinkets 2 and 3 but I would imagine that thse will work. I'll post more when I get them or if I find some more nice stuff for support.

Gorrog don't forget Living Ice Crystals from Heroic Eye of Eternity.
The healing on that plus tenacity pet healing bonus and Spirit Bond buff it up nicely. Been trying to get my hands on one for awhile now for this reason.
Plus it can always be used as a self heal when needed in an emergency.
As for a stam trinket the Essence of Gossamer from Azjol-nerub, don't have it myself either but nice stam on it.

I did ZG every reset to get the rep up to exalted and can't confirm a oom-heal from her.
In fact, with this low dps-start she will never heal herself. In the beginning she doesn't need to and after a certain point she will be oom =)

I want to ask a few things about incoming 3.1 changes to pets and abilities
1. Will "Improved Stings" be important talent to take in order to make those mana drains go faster.
2. Since Tunderstomp will be available to all Tenacity pets, what pet would you preffer for ZG Tiger & Raptor boss
(i am thinking for farming the mounts obviously)
I am thinking for Crocolisk, Bear or a Boar (the reason is that i am MM player and i don't want an Exotic pet just to use once a 3 days)
My thoughts are that the Crocolisk will have a lot more agro with his other ability and be able to hold more adds (tiger boss +2). The Boar will be able to do a lot more dmg vs single target bosses in order to be used in normal Raid content as a tenacity pet. The reason is that his secondary ability is a potential DPS one. The bear will have Swipe in his arsenal with a 6 sec CD and gives aditional AE threat in the table and a big potential DPS booster.

Couple of things. First on ZG bosses that heal. Their heals cost 100 mana so it is technically feasible for them to heal at "0%" mana. The obvious counter is to get them below 100 mana and keep them there.
On TBC mount farming:
1. Heroic Sethekk Halls is impossible to solo simply because it requires a druid to summon the Raven boss.
2. Heroic MGT, first boss is a push over, second boss is difficult but doable, third boss (the pvp group) is very hard-impossible (I don't know of any hunter that has soloed this. My personal best is 2 "bosses" and a pet) mostly because of the lack of agro lists. On the flip side it is insanely easy to duo this group. I would hazard a guess that Kael can be soloed and would be mildly difficult. Post 3.1 this might be more doable as wrym sting will actually be a useful CC with its new 30 second sleep.
3. Karazhan. Getting to the boss is easy enough. Currently is on the hard/impossible side as the combination of horse and rider nukes the pet down faster then 2pT5 and mend pet can handle. Should be much more doable with the new Glyph of Mending post 3.1

Yep had same experiences in MgT and Kara; first boss MgT easy, 2nd boss MgT a challenge but doable, 3rd one is not really doable solo (yet...). Attumen might be doable next patch with the buffs.
Update on ZG: did first clear today, including bat boss which is trivial once drained, and Jindo too (had to dismiss pet, i need to learn to think out of the box i guess :P )

You can farm the raptor easily solo since lvl 70, climb on the top of the temple and jump down a floor. Evade the raptor and nuke mandokir.
The only real interesting challenge with an reasonable effort is garr for the 2nd half of thunderfury. Bad Attitude combined with thunderstop will hopefully be enough to handle aoe'ing the adds down fast enough.
I hardly doubt that, with only the changes from the patch, attumen becomes soloable:
2205ish ticks of mend pet + silverback's heal of ~ 340 hp every 3.5s is only an hps increase of ~ 300.
Fully decked in ilvl 226+ gear (resulting in more damag->heal with 2pc t5) it is maybe soloable in the future.
I'm still wondering why we don't get a talent similar to Fel Synergy.

While Living Ice Crystal is very nice it is also extremly hard to get. Also when I was trying Garr today I almost made it past the adds. The solution is high dmg with 2T5 for maximum heal. Mana is more of a problem than anything else because at some point you won't have enough for volley and then your pet dies. I have to bring some mana pots along next time, I noticed this while doing core hound packs. Core hound packs are rather easy if you have enough damage since your T5 will heal enough if you do not use any tanking equip. The great thing about core hound packs is you can use aspect of the viper, with Garr you can't really switch you have to use Aspect of the Dragonhawk for maximum heal.

Isnt aggro the main problem though? Using 2xt5 + Mend is enough healing yeah, but if its YOU that gets all the damage, it wont help you much. Are you using a gorilla here? Cause i use a bear atm, next patch ill get thunderstomp.
Edit: you think it might be worth speccing deeper into MM for interupt immunity on Volley? So spec would be something like 35/33/3 (still want Hawk Eye for Geddon ofc)

What's the consensus on solo tanking pets in 3.1? With the changes to thuderstomp, will BM Turtles be the tank pet of choice?

Was Silverback nerfed in some way? Maybe I'm misreading you, but when the PTRs first went up with the new talents, I specced myself and my pet for full +stam and + heal talents, and each growl my gorilla was getting ~3.4k health from silverback, with just one point in the talent, selfbuffed - that's an additional 1360 hps with two points in the talent isn't it?
edit: wow, I just thought about that, and you're right, with 20k hp the pet really shouldn't have been healing for 3.4k. Unsure if I was just crazy that day or had a bugged gorilla, hopefully I have screenshots.
