Right, Consecration is the exception to the rule of other DoTs. Cons updates instantaneously from our own (de)buffs, while a "normal" DoT does not. Metamorphosis is an excellent example of a generic damage buff ("global" implies scope beyond a single person) which did not impact the Warlock's presently ticking DoT until next refresh.

Cons seems to pick up from you and the target instantaneously. The hidden debuff likely forces updates on yourself, and the need to re-calc damage each time it is inflicted (to ensure it doesn't pierce immune effects, etc) causes it to re-calc on target buff changes. It seems to be truly unique in this regard.

I forgot to test a pure spellpower trinket during Cons. Still on my to-do list. I would be highly surprised by anything short of immediate change, but it's always nice to verify.

I have been wondering that myself. On average, Impatience of Youth is 321 Mastery and 267.5 Strength (if used every 2 minutes, should be macro'd to Avenging Wrath).

The on use Str, and Agi, procs for the Tol Barad trinkets are current underbudget which causes them to lose a lot of value vs other 359 ilvl trinkets. As far as I know this issue hasn't been addressed on the PTR which means it probably won't make it into the next patch. Hopefully Blizzard recognizes this issue at some point and buffs the trinkets.

Edit: Took out the DMC: Hurricane part since someone covered it much better than I did.

2. Hurricane is still by far the best trinket from normal modes and slightly better than hardmodes, even after the nerf. It's proc should still be worth 450 dps after the patch (into 20k dps) which is over 200 str, much better than any other trinket. It is BIS until the next raiding tier comes out as far as I can tell.
Was posted back on page 20. Even with the bug fixed, the trinket will still be quite valuable.

Edit for clarification: The 'bug' refering to the 100% proc chance on certain skills (HoW,AS).

I apparently don't have a spellpower trinket anymore. Equipped spellpower 1H, no shield. Dropped Cons. Equipped (+Int) shield after 3 ticks - the next tick immediately increased. Expected results received.

This seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Looking at a list of Cata trinkets with "Use:" effects, almost all of them have a bonus that's 5 times the stat value of their other stat rather than the expected 6 (to account for their maximum 1/6th uptime).

The only two real exceptions to this rule are:
[Core of Ripeness]
[Fury of Angerforge] (which has additional limitations making is not quite as good as a pure "Use:" trinket anyway)

The only reason for this way of budgeting "Use:" effects that I can think of is that Blizzard expects them to be stacked with cooldowns to get ~20% boost to bring them in line with their budget. Even if this is the case, though, a static benefit should have about 1/6th of its value boosted by those same cooldowns, and a "Use:" item is likely to be used with a slightly longer effective cooldown (say, 125 seconds instead of 120) which combined probably still leave them about 5%-10% under budget in real-world use.

In Ret's case, we probably get a bit more than +20% bonus with stacked cooldowns from AW+TV and sometime GoAK, so Impatience should be close to the value of a static 321 strength that you might get on other trinkets.

However, chance to proc effects have an ICD of only 5 times proc duration. Although to be fair you should add a few seconds wiggle room getting them to actively proc.

This makes something like [Heart of Solace] appear downright superior to [Impatience of Youth].

Solace is 1710 Str * 20/100, or 342 Str. Even if you call it 110 seconds between procs you have 311 Str.
Youth is 1605 * 20/120, or 267.5 Str.

Yes, you could use Youth on-demand, rather than having it randomly proc. Haste will also be inferior to Mastery post-patch, so you would also be getting more of a superior stat on the Youth. However, not enough more to make up for the Str discrepancy.

311 Str - 267.5 Str is 43.5 Str.
321 Mastery - 285 Haste is 36 rating. Let's say that Mastery will be 10% superior to Haste. This is the equivalent of another 28.5 rating gain, for a total of 64.5 rating. (Note, until the patch trading the smaller value of Haste for a greater value of Mastery is not a gain, but a loss, although partially mitigated over overcome by the extra Crit you could gain from reforging.)

Unfortunately, 43.5 Str is hands down superior to 64.5 rating (especially pre-patch trading Haste for 36 more of the inferior Mastery).

Yes, you can/will use Youth along with AW and Zeal, increasing the benefit gained. However, any delays in CD/trinket usage to match with burn phases/Heroism/etc is lost time, as Chippy noted. Match this with the reasonable chance that a portion of the time some of a proc trinket will overlap an AW/Zeal window. There will be a gain from controlling the proc, just not as large a gain as may be hoped.

This leads to a situation where a blue Heroic trinket is at least equal, if not superior to an epic purchasable trinket. Youth is a filler purchase, at best.

I would personally prefer the combo of Solace + DMC: Hurricane over either with Youth. Others may decide the on-use functionality is far more useful (especially for coordinated burn phases/Hero) and I would respect their choice.

On AOE and CC - yes, we cannot use HW or Cons in close proximity to CC targets, nor can a tank use their AOE abilities. Which is easily solved if the tank simply moves the current target away from CC. This has nothing to do with speculating about random ability changes and is something to be conquered via skill (yours and the tank's).

Another thing to remember is that on use trinkets will interfere with the Engi glove tinker causing it to go on a 15 second cd and vice versa.

Has anyone actually done any testing on average cooldown times for proc trinkets? Wowhead lists the proc rate on Solace as only 10% and they are clearly budgeted for 1/6th average uptime, so I wonder if 110 is overly optimistic? I also wonder if "on melee attack" proc trinkets are inherently overvalued for Ret due to extra SoT attacks.

"on melee attacks" seem to proc only from auto-attacks, CS and TV.
At least license to slay, for example, doesn't proc from seal damage.

If those are really the only proc sources, I imagine they are actually a bit worst for rets compared to the rest, considering so many "non-melee attacks" we have above our melee attacks on priority.

In that case the expectation value is proccing it after 10 valid hits. assuming 3.6 attack speed base, 4.5 second crusader strike cooldown, 1.5 HoPo when it comes of cooldown, 2.25 base CD left on crusader strike and 1.8 base cd left on autoattack one would expect it to take about 16.5/(1+[haste]) seconds. The big assumption there is crusader strike on cooldown and 1 mastery proc, so it would end up taking a bit longer normally. I assume the ICD is 90 seconds so I don't think the 110 seconds is overly optimistic.

AFAIK ICDs are *supposed* to be 5 times proc duration (in this case 20 * 5 = 100). If its really 90 seconds then that alone would be a big (likely unintended) buff compared to other trinkets. On the other hand, if it takes close to 20 seconds on average to proc and the ICD is the proper 100 seconds, then its right on budget.

I just read 90 seconds on wowhead, with 5 times duration it would be spot on indeed. I think that most importantly it is alright to assume a 1/6th uptime in weighing those procs.

Browsing my own logs (I use a Solace at the moment) I haven't seen a proc below 100 seconds. ICD of 5 times duration seems correct.

It is currently difficult to test if SoT application could proc such an effect, since it only happens on autoattack. To determine we could test if Judgement from range procs such trinkets. If Judge does not proc, then on PTR repeated Judgements could be used to see if SoT application could proc such a trinket (which would vastly increase proc chance post-patch).

As noted, On Use trinkets come into some conflict with engineering perks in regard to stacking with buffs. Chance to proc would gain marginally, as it could occur during the same window as springs/AW/Zeal, but a majority of the time it would not sync and thus would function effectively identical to an On Use used outside of cooldowns.

Given other variables the same, On Use is superior to proc since it can be accurately controlled/conjoined. In the particular circumstance of the [Impatience of Youth], it feels more like an individually lackluster trinket rather than design. For example post-patch [Fury of Angerforge] (fixed to permit a full 1/6th up time) would be greater Str for the same ilevel budget.

From testing done early into the 4.0.6 PTR, Judgement was not procing "On Melee" trinkets (specifically, the PTR Character Copies come equipped with License to Slay).
