Joe Ego did a bit of work already on the subject at level 85, found here. Outside of base mana, nothing has really changed that would alter his work, so it should hold the same at 90. The main takeaways are:
  • the viability of Glyph of Illumination is primarily dependent on Holy Shock usage (more frequent use of Shock = more mana gains), then on Critical %.
  • at lower levels of spirit, Glyph of Illumination results in better mana regen; at higher levels of spirit, Spirit becomes better again

I quickly modified the spreadsheet for level 90 and it looks like in full 463 gear, with spirit food and flask, you should already be above the breakpoint where Spirit becomes better than the Glyph (assuming average usage e.g. ~9 Shocks-per-minute). It is probably not worth using the glyph until you have the T14-4pc and at least some heroic gear. If I can find some time this weekend, I'll try to put together a full set of heroic gear and see how the numbers compare (though I suspect it still won't be worth it, unless we end up with a significant amount of crit and/or low gains in spirit going from normal to heroic gear).

If anything I've written seems wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me.

Mostly because the steady damage in most normals in MSV is insignificant. Despite the excessive overkill of the abilities in 10man, I enjoyed the extra cooldown due to the spiky nature of most of MSV's content.

But I suppose I've already reached a level of gear where I'm not really worried about dumping mana during damage spikes anymore. It's quite embarrassing to realise three weeks into raiding that almost every progessed holy pally has taken divine purpose.

I'll refrain from posting these things until I've gotten into the hardmodes and are more pressed to explore the class more.

The only thing I would correct is the reference to my original post on the Glyph at level 90, found here.

Generally speaking, I like the idea of the glyph. But the glyph doesn't give us a way to adjust our play style. It just gives us a good/bad choice with the only decision being informed with the knowledge of when it is one or the other.

New holy pally on the scene

Hi everyone.

New holy pally on the scene. switched from being a rogue to a holy pally to satisfy raid needs. From the thread I've concluded (and correct me if I'm wrong here)

1. Spirit is our primary stat. Haste, Mastery or Crit will depend on your play style. Some people like the fast heals, some like to increase IH from mastery and some like the big crits. So, when you reforge, you reforge to a point where you are satisfied with your mp5 then reforge to your play style. (for me that's a bit of mastery and haste).

2. I've seen a lot of discussion about glyphs and in particular *Glyph of Flash of Light and its mana use. Is it a viable option? seems to depend on the situation. Am I correct in saying that?

3. I would like to speak (and though it's only from LFR experience) about the level 90 talent. I found that in certain fights Light's Hammer rocked and in other fights Execution Sentence (when single target healing was involved) rocked the meters. In WothE fight, Execution Sentence was awesome. I was targeting tank and a few melee behind me. I don't find Holy Prism to be that effective (yet). Maybe in the next raid?

Now, for my questions:

Macros: anyone have any useful marcos? There are a shit ton of abilities on a pally, I can't imagine not having a few useful macros.

Top 3 heals: What should be my top 3 healing spells? I understand this may depend a little on my play style, but in general what should they be?

Gear/gems/enchants: Will anyone be making a guide similar to other guides that you find on EJ? If so, I'd like to help somehow.

Equivalence points: This is from my rogue days, but we would have EP values set to certain stats. This is not the same for a holy pally, correct? Spirit, for example, wouldn't have an EP value of 2.1 or something so you can do the math on a piece of gear to see which is better.

*Combat regen VS spirit regen on toon sheet: combat regen under the spell category on the toon sheet is different than the combat regen listed under spirit. Can someone clarify why that is?

*Edit: glyph of flash of light linking to word of glory so i removed the link and added an additional question about mana regen under the toon sheet.

Thanks in advance

@ trixxus

I think i start with the Macros which im using.
I changed most of the important and supportive spells into mouseover so i can move fast over my raid frame and heal (ex. /cast [target=mouseover] [target=player] Holy Light ). I just can tell you about the macros iam using so thats it so far.

Lets move on to the top 3 heals.
It really depends on the bosses you fight, if they do more aoe based damage or a lot more singletarged tank damage. It also depends on how you heal, if you rather press some aoe heals like Holy Radiance or you go for shock and Word of Glory. Anyway lets take the first boss of mogushan, the stoneguard as an example:

1. Illuminated Healing
2. Eternal Flame
3. Holy Beacon

I really prefer to reforge into mastery cause in my opinion it is the most comfortable way to heal. If your haste rate is very high you will find yourself spamming fast heals and losing alot of mana. The point of mastery in my opinion is that absorbed damage is always better then taken damage which you got to heal.

You really got to find out on which playstyle your comfortable with there is no ''wrong'' way to heal. Choose your reforging style and then go out and try

-Hope i could help you a bit and im rly sorry for my bad english :/

Hey Trixxus, im using some makros similar to the ones cudi is using, i just added focus/player to the priority list.
most of them look like the following:
#showtooltip Göttliches Licht
/cast [@mouseover,nomod,exists] Göttliches Licht; [@focus,nomod,exists] Göttliches Licht; [@player,nomod,exists] Göttliches Licht
Mouseover as the first option, focus as fallback and player if nothing else is possible.

holy prism

I see a lot of people complaining about holy prism. I for one have it and I just target the boss or an add and it heals most melee for 35k + heals with no problems with targeting. What targeting problem are people having? Is it just not enough people in range?

It's possible that not enough people are in range either due to raid compositions, how large the boss is, or other raid mechanics.

However, one of the bigger issues with Holy Prism is its CD: 20 seconds is on the verge of feeling like maintenance. Coupled with the above problems I can certainly see why many people don't go for it.

gems/enchants

@cudi and Plat,

Thanks for your replies and the macros. I did some testing for my top 3 heals and I'm on par with Cudi's prediction. so I must be doing something right.

Red sockets:
will this depend on socket bonus or should you straight up gem intell with [Brilliant Primordial Ruby] or a hybrid gem like [Purified Imperial Amethyst]

Blue sockets I can see using [Purified Imperial Amethyst]. But what about yellow socket?

Thanks

Hey, personally i go for as much spirit as i can get, so [Purified Imperial Amethyst] for red sockets,
pur spirit for blue ones and [Zen Wild Jade] for yellow sockets.
But i guess this just fits to my playstyle with high amounts of mastery and less haste.

Totally agree with that.

I want to start a discussion about what lv 45 talent is mayor.

Eternal flame OR sac. shield

Im using eternal flame cause i do alot of words of glory in my top spells, but i saw alot healpali going with sac shield which is also in their top spell listed. I reforged mastery so i dont think its much worth cause of the absorb ticks which scaled with haste, but id like to hear your opinion guys.

I went with eternal flame and really like it. I like the feeling of a huge (possible) crit heal at 3 HP and taking the tank from 200k to 330k in 1 heal and then having a HOT to heal any additional amount. I tried sac shield and I didn't like the feeling of absorbs. I found it a bit weird for my play style. However, I can certainly see where sac shield would be awesome. Would sac shield conserve mana vs eternal flame? That's another question I'd like answered. especially since mana is such an issue early on.

After looking at some holy pallies in the top guilds, they too have gone eternal flame over sac shield. but they might be changing talents based on the fight which I suspect they do. changing talents is great now, no need to go back to the trainer, you can literally change 1 talent before a fight to test out configurations. it's great.

enchant to chest

Why [Enchant Chest - Glorious Stats] and not [Formula: Enchant Chest - Mighty Spirit]? I understand with glorious stats you get both 80intell and spirit, but isn't it better to go for the 200 spirit? I guess the argument could be made that the majority of chest pieces have spirit on it and adding 200 when you can opt for 80 more intell wouldn't be necessary. thoughts? Who's doing a guide for enchants/gear/gems?

You can't compare EF and SS's numbers straight up since EF replaces WoG. If you were to compare them, you had to compare SS with the difference of EF and WoG. There's also the fact that for EF, you have to use HoPo on a single target heal. In a 25m setting, that's wasted in most situation. I'd rather use it on LoD and pick SS with its low opportunity (and mana) cost. But the importance of this aspect diminishes with group size, obviously.

My understanding of why we use glorious stats is due to int being more valuable than any secondary stat per single point. So, compare the two enchants, Mighty Spirit provides 120 more spirit than Glorious Stats, but Glorious Stats also provides intellect. Your choice is basically 120 spirit or 80 intellect. I couldn't find the current stat weights for throughput, but I am going to assume that they remain the same as Int>Haste>everything else. For raw throughput 80 Int is more valuable than 120 spirit but we do have to consider that healing is dynamic rather than static. If you are running out of mana and then people are dying get mighty spirit. If people are dying and you still have a decent chunk of mana you need better throughput so that points towards Glorious Stats.

I have a question of my own now: how are people handling running OoM? In cataclysm when I ran OoM I could recover 50-75% of my mana through clever use of Divine Plea lined up with Int procs and Mana Hymn and the other healers covering me for 5-10 seconds. I am finding now that when I run OoM its gone forever and is extremely hard get back up to even 100k mana. Assuming using divine plea on CD, and using efficient heals, and not overhealing a lot (my overhealing is down at 10-12%) what else can I do to either prolong my mana pool and/or be able to recover from heavy usage and OoM?
