The vast majority of top US guilds do lust/hero right at the beginning, both to get healers shard stacks, and also because the beginning of the fight has the last movement.

My guild certainly does.

With a early bloodlust and shadow priests tanking both shards, the healer can usually get to middlish 60 stacks.

Our last kill: World of Logs - Real Time Raid Analysis I actually got pretty shitty stacks, and I hit 58. I'd say the most possible in an absolutely ideal situation would be about 75.

You should note that you're talking about 25m hero. The situation in 10m hero is quite different since you can get to about 90-108stacks (the latter being my personal record) with the first shard. But still 10m hero raids BL too during the first shard. This makes every healer cast his fast heal at 1sec so nets you really a lot of stacks.

Ember versus Revitalizing meta gems

I haven't seen any proper theorycrafting on the choice between Ember and Revitalizing meta gems for Holy and Discipline priests (Google revealed nothing, apologies if my search skills failed). Thought I'd toss out a little (selfishly based on my own gear level - ilvl 377 - and healing style):

Let's pretend we've got a 500-second fight.


For Holy: ~4000 mp5 from Spirit. ~1000-1700 mp5 based on mana pool (ranging from one Fiend to two Fiends + well-timed Hymn). ~21% crit rate.

Ember: grants 54 intellect, increasing mana pool by ~860, crit chance by a bit under 0.1%, and raw healing done by about 0.7%. The 2% mana boost brings the mana pool increase to about 3200. Ember therefore nets Holy 3200 + 2700-4700 (from mana-pool-based regen) = 5900-7900 mana over the course of the fight. The throughput boost is about 0.75%, almost entirely provided uniformly to all your spells.

Revitalizing: 54 Spirit gives about 72 mp5. Crits make up roughly 30% of total healing, so increasing that value by 3% increases total throughput by about 0.9%, distributed in a spiky and unpredictable fashion (which, frankly, is usually not the big deal some people make it out to be). Total mana gain is 7200 over the course of the fight.

So they're pretty close. In terms of mana, Ember has the edge under optimal circumstances, Revitalizing wins under less-optimal circumstances, but the swing is not a tremendous deal either way. Revitalizing has a ~20% throughput edge, but Ember has more-consistent throughput.


For Discipline: ~2500 mp5 from Spirit. ~2500-3300 mp5 based on mana pool. 33% effective crit rate.

Ember: 54 Intellect increases mana pool by about 990, crit chance by close to 0.1%, and raw healing done by a bit under 0.7%. Total mana pool increase is about 3650. Total mana boost over the course of the fight is 3650 + 6800-9000 = 10450-12650. Throughput boost is a bit over 0.7%, applied pretty much uniformly.

Revitalizing: 54 Spirit grants about 50 mp5. Crits plus crit-inspired Divine Aegis account for about 50% of total healing, so increasing that value by 3% increases total throughput by about 1.5%. Total mana gain is about 2500.

So Ember has a significant (7500-10000) mana edge (which works out to something in the neighborhood of a 1.5% increase), while Revitalizing has more than twice the throughput bonus.


Summary: If you're Holy, it doesn't matter much what you do. If you're Discipline, it's a tradeoff of 1.5% more mana (Ember) vs. .75% more healing (Revitalizing).

Could someone point me towards Priest Healing 101 information please? Which spec is better for a noob healer and such. I have never healed in my 6 years of playing WoW and I want to speed up my ques for dungeons leveling from 80-85.

I just returned home after an 8 month deployment on a US Warship. So, I was at least 7 months behind when I started playing to begin with. Loving the new expansion so far.

PM's are preferred. Any direct information or suggested links are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your patience.

Non-Archangel/Atonement Discipline is probably the least complicated priest healing priority/rotation.

There's a pretty good guide for Disc priests here: Manaflask - 4.2 Discipline Priest Guide by Narilka - posted by narilka - Blogs

I'd suggest the hybrid/non-smite build he lists. I'm not sure if the guide is fully up to date with the 4.2 changes, but not much has significantly changed so it should be a fine starting point.

Spiritual Guidance: What's the best race for a Horde shadow priest?

It outlines the pro's and con's of each race so even though he doesn't cover the healing side of things, it should help in your choice. Picking out the more relivant parts for healers, the breakdown is as follows;

Undead breaks fear - Semi useful in some pve encounters but largely a waste.
Trolls have 20% haste for 8secs - Again semi useful if you require a short burst of healing.
Blood Elfs get 6% mana back every 2mins. - Combined with int procs and hymm can return a decent chunk of mana.
Goblins get 1% haste - Extra casts.

Personally, I would go either with Troll or Blood Elf. Why? because 20% haste is very strong when paired with Hymn of Hope or Divine Hymn. It also allows another way to open up Renew-6 (and in combination, also Renew-7).

Blood Elf has the extra mana. And mana is always good. Not much to say there. The passive haste from Goblin is nice, but I would just prefer to reach unreachable plateaus with the Troll racial. Especially come 4.3 with the massive buff to Divine Hymn. Of course, this is all assuming Divine Hymn still scales with haste.

Has anyone tried using Glyph of Spirit Tap on Ragnaros? I know I get Victory Rush procs from the Molten Elementals on my warrior at least, so was wondering if it's worth trying for HC Rag since I joined a new guild after a small break in raiding and my gear is a bit behind, so mana is a bit iffy there. Obviously the chances of getting a killing blow SW: D as a healer are fairly small, but still.

I had no chance to try it on the lava scions or sons, so i can just speak for the molten elementals.

Without A/A I found that I didn't have any real reason not to have this glyph. There just aren't enough good major glyphs out there. On Rag (I haven't tried heroic) I have been able to time SW:D to gain back mana. However, on normal the healing requirements are typically low when adds are out and I have spare time to attempt it a few times.

This glyph certainly does work, but it requires some practice not to mention spare cast time. It may also depend on your group.. it's not uncommon for our group to put less pressure on low health targets during Rag.

When I have the opportunity and downtime to try this, I tend to get 1 good shot per fight and depending on procs I can gain back 12-16k mana. I think it's rather fun but something that a person would rarely be in a position to afford the time and also be in a position where that mana had any real impact on the fight.

Quick question about shadow. The priority states that i should cast MB on cooldown, but if i get a mastery trinket proc and have mind blasted just before the proc expires to extend the increased empowered shadows effect, do i still MB on cd, or should i wait until empowered shadows is just about to fall off to keep the additional benefeit? (In my case, the mastery proc puts me from 32% to 42% increased shadow damage)

On my priest, I am presently at 27.30% haste, 12.15% crit, and 14.59 mastery. When I used SimC to determine if my stat weights have changed I was surprised to find that, despite the disparity between my haste and crit, it still valued haste a fair amount higher.

While the weights of haste and crit are closer together now then they were last week, the amount of haste % I have acquired in that time increased from 14% to the current 27%, where as my crit has only increased about 2%. Am I taking the stat rankings too literally?

Question: My shadow priest doesn't raid normal 10/25-mans, but I can raid due to Raid Finder. Is it better to get the raid finder tokens for the raid finder T13 or the gear from valor points which has a higher ilvl (384 vs 397)?

Which one is better for shadow priest: 2pt12+2pt13 or 4pt13? Imo 4pt13 bonus is not as good as 2pt12, but im not sure.
