Neither Icy Veins nor Noxxic is especially reliable for rogues. (I also don't think their AoE recommendations have been updated since Mists launched, if not just before -- their CT recommendations are based, I believe, on earlier builds of the ability in which it dealt more damage, not to mention when the bug was still in place that was doubling the number of combo points it granted when used with Anticipation.)

As Un4s noted, this very forum is probably the best place to be for wisdom on how to play each spec in a raid-type environment. For basic PvE Q&A, it's my completely and utterly unbiased opinion that this little collection put together by this guy I know is pretty decent, and Verelyse has a nice max-level-optimization runthrough in the official WoW rogue forum as well.

For PvP, I know there's a detailed overview by Hïldegard over at ArenaJunkies, but I can't speak to its accuracy; rogues haven't been terribly popular in competitive PvP thus far in the expansion, so reliable guides on how to optimally play the class are pretty hard to come by. IMO the attachment to Subtlety in PvP is as much a "might as well keep doing it, we haven't figured anything better out" kind of thing than a "Subtlety is clearly dominant among the rogue specs" kind of thing, particularly in regular battlegrounds.

I have a blog. The Red-Hatted Rogue Reporter. Is what it is called. By me.

Subtlety is largely stuck to because a full energy bar shadow dance is the most on request burst of any spec, plus provides a lot of higher skill extra CC. Killing spree is only marginally pvp viable, and that's combat's only real thing (even AR+SB is too slow / easy to counter). Assassination is viable, but mostly as the easier spec to play, not really in any way better for high end arena / pvp than subtlety.

Quick question since i just switched to Assa last night after getting the Spiritsever finally.
Now especially for fights where combat would be superior because of its cleave (Windlord, Garalon, Stone Guards):

Is it useful to use FoK as CP builder on two targets? Or is it more reasonable to just go for standard single target rotation?
I know i should keep Rupture up on each target but how about cp building?

I won't switch to combat in cleave fights since i'm just in a somewhat casual raidguild and my second spec is for pvp so i'm really interested in optimal AoE/cleave rotations for Assa. :>

Thanks

My simple question is: now that simcraft has been running for a while, and is updated on a regular basis: which EP values are seen as more accurate, shadowcraft's or simcraft's?

The EP values are similar in both - and as I understand these are independent projects, this is always reassuring. However, there are some differences, and sometimes these differences affect the relative order, and so the optimal reforging (for example, with my current gear, shadowcraft has crit>haste>exp and simcraft says haste>crit>expertise).

I have come across older discussions back from when simcraft was newer, and shadowcraft was deemed more accurate (e.g. this thread), but I was wondering if there had been any more recent discussion?

Un4s: Generally the accepted number of targets to begin using FoK as a builder is 7. And Combat would only be better on windlord as false inflation at best. You will do more damage to the boss and on aoe as assassination (if you have blade flurry on during recklessness you're doing it wrong). 2-3 target cleave you just maintain multiple ruptures and keep SnD up though.

Wimpyone: For the most part it's accepted that as you gain gear expertise, haste, and crit are marginally different from each other at best, and mastery is clearly better. So you will not see much dps difference regardless of which of the 3 you prefer, but expertise is going to cap itself out as you get higher in gear levels anyway.

Sometimes when changing targets while AoE spamming (because my current target is about to die) I do not start accumulating CP on the new target, from either FoK or HaT, until I manually get one point (e.g., with Hemo). At that point CP start accumulating normally. But sometimes I switch targets and the CP start appearing on their own.

Anybody know what's going on? Is it because my old target is still alive with 1 or more CP on it?

That's exactly the reason it's happening. And it doesn't have to even be alive; same thing happens if there is a corpse with CP on it. Another reason might be that the target you have selected is not in the range of your FoK. It's pretty awkward, , but the best remedy when you notice this happening is to either CT, redirect, or put a heal on yourself.

Question re: Protectors of the Endless HC - if you cloak the lighting prison is it safe for others near you i.e. do they still take aoe damage from it or not? I'm asking so I know whether or not I need to move out of the group when this is on me - or not if Cloak is up. Also i don't suppose gouge works as an interrupt in this fight does it?!

Cloak removes the debuff completely. And the bosses are not stunnable, gouge doesn't work.

Hey I've been looking around for a few minutes and tried to do a search, but it didn't find any results. Where is the subtlety rogue forum?

Subtle Ways of Subtlety

It's actually just hidden, but still there. Here's how to show old threads:
User CP -> Edit Options. About 1/2 way down the screen under the "Thread Display Options" category. There will be a setting labeled "Default Thread Age Cut Off". Change that to Show all Threads.

I tried to search this up, but couldn't find anything specific. I'm using askmrrobot, and it's saying that it is not 100% important to meet exp cap, and has placed the stat at 7.30%. Is this acceptable, or does it need to be at 7.50% for raiding? Thanks!

It depends on the spec. Assassination does not care much about expertise capping, however it is necessary for combat.

What?

Where is this number coming from? The question was about assassination aoe.

Not sure but AoE hasn't been clearly defined. Neither the number of target necessary nor the "cycle" whichever the spec. I was also wondering if someone had done some math on that btw? Here's my guess :

Combat :

< 5 targets = BF up, keep going with normal rotation
>= 5 targets = BF up, normal cycle BUT keep CT up on all targets / Only use FoK + 5CP CT on thrash pack that won't live for a long time.

Even if that will change in 5.2, would be nice to have a better idea of what is optimal/will be optimal.

Assassination :

< 5 targets = Tab-Rupturing (Mut > Rupt > tab > Mut > Rupt > ...) and focus on main target.
>= 5 targets = Tab-Rupturing with FoK as CP builder, 2 CP Rupt, then keep SnD up with Envenom

The case of Sha of Fear HC is particular to handle since you have to do maximum damage on both the boss and the adds. After comparing a bunch of logs on him, it seems that the best method is keeping the single-target rotation on the boss while FoKing (>= 5 adds) everytime you gain the Envenom buff and adds are in range.
