How to calculate a spells cast time using buffs?

I'm trying to revisit my character profile to work out how much haste I would need to have on my items to hit no lower than the 1 second cast time. So with Lava Burst having a 2 second base cast time. How would I work out how much haste is needed to reduce it to 1 second taking into account these buffs:

Totem (5% Haste)
Elemental Mastery (20% Haste)
Goblin Racial (1% Haste)
Bloodlust (30% Haste)

I came up with this calculation but i think im way off:

Base Cast Time	2.0000

Less the following reductions:

5% Totem	0.1000
1% Goblin	0.0200
20% Ele Mastery	0.4000
Bloodlust	0.6000
Haste (21.13%)	0.4226

Revised Cast Time:

Cast Time	0.4574

There are 5 problems with the approach you tried.

First, if you have Elemental Mastery, you're an elemental shaman, and your Lava Burst base cast time is 1.5s, not 2.0s.

Second, haste effects don't reduce your cast time by the haste you have. Rather, they allow you to cast more spells (or more melee swings) in the same amount of time. For example, 10% haste doesn't mean your 2.0s Lightning Bolt cast time is reduced by 10% -- it means instead of being able to cast 100 Lightning Bolts in 200 seconds, you can cast 110 of them. To figure out what this makes your cast time,
2.0 * 100 / 110 = 1.818
(not 1.800)
Third, haste effects are multiplicative, not additive. So the haste effects you list should be
((1.05 * 1.20 * 1.01 * 1.30 * 1.2113) - 1) * 100 = 100.40%
(not 5 + 20 + 1 + 30 + 21.13 = 77.13%)
Fourth, you shouldn't worry about gearing for temporary haste buffs like Elemental Mastery, Berserking, or Bloodlust / Heroism.

And finally, I think you're not really interested in what your cast time is with your current gear. I'm pretty sure what you meant to ask is, how much haste can you get before you reach the 1.0s global cooldown cap for lava burst. For that, you want
((1.5 / 1.0) / (1.05 * 1.01) - 1) * 100 * 128.05716 = 5307 haste rating (or 5488 for non-goblin)
which is high enough you shouldn't worry about it.

So, I have a question about weapons..

I am currently using 2x Tremendous Tankard O' Terror (Tremendous Tankard O' Terror - Item - World of Warcraft), but in tonights raid I got myself a 391 dagger (Avool's Incendiary Shanker - Item - World of Warcraft), and I was wondering if it is worth using even though it's a dagger. After all, it's DPS is a fair bit higher.

First of all, the answer most would give is the easy one : Sim your results, and see which gives higher dps.

However, without even simming, I can virtually guarantee that the dagger will come out to be less dps. Boiling it down from a very complicated math oriented discussion: you never want to use a weapon less than 2.6 speed. Ever. I don't know how to put a link in here, but here's the webpage on these forums where it talks about it.

[Enhancement] 4.2 - Someone Spilled Spells all over this Axe

In several sections near "Caster Weapons" and "Windfury weapon" you will see that the damage of windfury and stormstrike, two of your highest sources of damage, come directly from non-normalized weapon damage. In addition, Flametongue weapon is normalized to your weapon speed, so faster weapons will deal less damage. The sum total of these effects means that 3 of the top 5 sources of all enhancement shaman damage are based on (or will do more with) high damage slow speed weapons. It would take FAR more than a few item levels to overcome these effects.

I do like the way askmrrobot shows this, if you click on the link at the bottom right for 'show stat weights' it actually shows you how your weapon speed is more than 10 (5 times for MH) times as valuable as the agility on the weapon, and similar for the weapon dps.

Blizzard wants us using 2.6 speed mace/axe/fists, and they're happy to design the class around that goal. Now if only they would stop putting them on the 5th or last boss in the tier... Wishlisting.

Ok I want to ask a very quick very simple question.

Is the proc chance of Elemental Overload reduced for Chain Lightning on a single target? Eg. if Elemental Overload states that I have a 26% chance for it to occur, will Chain Lightning proc Elemental Overload 26% of the time, or is this diminished on a single target?

My understanding is that the proc chance falls for each target hit after the first, but discussions I've had recently have suggested to me that the proc chance of CL is lower in general, rather than falling according to the number of targets.

I also understand that this may be addressed somewhere else on the forums, but I would like it clarified if possible.

This is based on the last time I tested this. Feel free to test yourself, it's really not that difficult to fire up Skada or the WoL client, hit dummies, and then do some math.

The chance to proc CL overloads is mastery / 3 for each target that you hit with CL. If you have it glyphed it remains at mastery / 3 per target. Rolling thunder procs at 60% on each target that takes damage from your CL or CL overloads.

Hello guys,

i read the actually news of mmo-champ and i found this abuse news :

"2pc T12 bonus was overpowered, so it got nerfed and they slightly buffed the damage of the Fire Elemental."

Do you think that its important to use the fire-elemental-glyph when the patch comes? If yes ... which glyph would you replace than ?

It's quite sure that the Fire-Elemental buffs the eleshaman with t12 2-bonus a lot. But it dont pushes us up to the dmg heaven. Or do you think that the nerf is justified?

And i got another question. Which Trinket combination is better ?

(1) Darkmooncard : Vulkano + Necromantic Focus

or

(2) Darkmooncard : Vulkano + Variable Pulse Lightning Capacitor

Iam interested in your answers.

I have pretty simple question. Legendary staff in 4.3, what do you think? Still possibly BiS or HC loot (maybe the staff from DW) beats it?

Hero/BL/ TW twice?

I have seen numerous logs of ppl using Heroism (or Bloodlust/timewarp) twice during a single encounter, ie within the ten minute CD. How can this happen? I have searched for an answer for quite a while, and it still bemuses me. Or, if I am just being dumb (:P), let me know the secret please. Thanks in advance

And pets. I don't know if this applies to warlocks and hunters, but at least enhancer can BL their spirit wolves each time if enough shamans and mages are willing to contribute.

There have been some pretty cloudy descriptions of whether it is better to UE>FS>LL>FN, or FS>UE>LL>FN when starting Enh Aoe packs.

Was just looking for some clarification on this issue.

I've just come back with 4.3 and have been gearing up an 85 resto shaman. Looking at lootrank at Guildox with their resto template, including LFR raids only + 5 man heroics I noticed something I hadn't thought of as being possible so wanted to confirm here.

For weapon choices it is saying that Vagaries of Time is best in MH (assumed that or Maw would be) but then for offhand it's suggesting Scepter of Azshara. Is this just a function of the stats weighting putting the best weighted option there or is it actually possible for resto to dual-wield rather than MH + Shield/OH frill? The possibility hadn't really occurred to me and I can't recall ever seeing it in a group before but if it's possible with no downsides then I guess that opens up some further gearing choices.
