if i can, this can often prevent me from having to cast over the end of my immolate, and let me reduce the number of times i cast immolate slightly in favor of casting incinerate because i could allow immolate not to be up 100% of the time without losing incinerate damage.
is this even possible? and if it is, does anyone know if it would work out the way i think it would to increase dps?

Incinerate's damage is calculated on the spell cast, not on the animation's hit. Thus, if you have an immolate on the target when the cast becomes successful, your hit will benefit from the Immolate being on the target even if Immolate fades before the animation hits. This prevents you from having to clip the end of an immolate a lot of the time.
However, because of this mechanic, if you cast Incinerate without Immolate being up and then put an Immolate up in flight, your Incinerate will *not* gain the +damage from Immolate being on the target.
