Your reasoning is dead on. From my analysis, it's worthwhile to match a single blue socket for 5+ spellpower or a single yellow socket for 7+ spellpower to maximize raid DPS. Any piece with more than one yellow/blue socket should be gemmed straight runed cardinals.

I stand corrected. Using BIS profile for simcraft, it looks like molten core procs yield 112 more dps than without.

I have to agree, so locking this thread. Please use reports though if a thread is outdated due to another new thread on the same subject being started, it's more likely to be handled in a timely manner if you do so.
