This means that worst case with kings, a purified is roughly equal to a runed for a 5 spellpower bonus, and superior when either the bonus is higher or when we have 3 or more purified dreadstones. We need two purified dreadstones in any case so it seems to be always worthwhile for items with that socket/bonus setup. Is this logic reasonable, or is there a hole in it that I'm missing?

Your reasoning is dead on. From my analysis, it's worthwhile to match a single blue socket for 5+ spellpower or a single yellow socket for 7+ spellpower to maximize raid DPS. Any piece with more than one yellow/blue socket should be gemmed straight runed cardinals.
