Trinket Discussion
Hey everyone.
I've perused several of the warlock threads, and have yet to see any significant discussion revolving around the available trinkets in game. Since the expansion was rather new, I was hoping we could get some experiences out of people that are using various trinkets; how well they work, approximate internal cooldowns, proc frequency, etc. Hard data would be fantastic, but anecdotal evidence has a place as well. I'll start by listing some of the more notable epic trinkets from Wowhead. [Darkmoon Card: Death] Notes: Potentially a new Timbal's Focusing Crystal; I'm particularly interested in this trinket. Does anyone have it, or have any information to report on it? [Darkmoon Card: Illusion] Notes: Definitely more of a healer trinket, but viable in the absence of other trinkets. Would be interesting to know if the damage shield prevents some of the damage done by casting Life Tap. [Dying Curse] [Embrace of the Spider] [Item not found!] Notes: New Timbal's Focusing Crystal. [Illustration of the Dragon Soul] Notes: New Darkmoon Card: Crusade [Sundial of the Exiled] Notes: 40 badge trinket. [The Egg of Mortal Essence] Notes: 40 badge trinket. The haste proc -DOES- proc off of Fel Armor ticks, as well as 2pc T5 heals, as long as they are not 100% overheal ticks. Personally, I'm currently using the Egg of Mortal Essence and the Skull of Gul'dan. I got the egg to play with, since I had extra badges, and was quite happy to discover that it works off of Fel Armor procs. I was going to do some testing on Patchwerk this week to see Sundial vs. Egg performance. |
I'm using embrace of the spider, if you want, you can calculate the uptime from our wws: Wow Web Stats

Blue trinkets that are early upgrades:
[Mark of the War Prisoner] - Heroic Violet Hold [Forge Ember] - Heroic Halls of Stone [Pendulum of Telluric Currents] - Heroic Oculus [Tome of Arcane Phenomena] - Normal Oculus And of worthwhile note: [Rune of Infinite Power] - From a very easy quest that can hold you over if the RNG gods hate you. Most likely, all trinkets that proc a buff have a 45 second internal cooldown, as that seems pretty standard these days. Edit: Purchased and tested [The Egg of Mortal Essence]. It does proc off of Fel Armor. It does proc off of Health Funnel. It does not proc off of Fel Synergy. It does not proc off of 2pT5. It does not proc off of Drain Life. |
IDK if I would call Dying Curse a new Bloodgem; however it is an excellent trinket and by far the easiest way to get much needed +hit. The trinket itself has a 45s internal cooldown and procs off everything, all casts as well as making bolts of cloth and such. I don’t know the exact % on chance to proc but it’s basically up every 45s.
The Sundial has the same internal cooldown as Dying Curse from what I can tell, only procs from damaging spells, instants and casts, has a very similar proc chance %. They can proc at the same time. Egg is the next thing i will mess with, i have the badges for it currently, will prob test next week. Looks to be a stronger Destro/demo trinket then aff. |
Taken from wowhead. As you can see this trinket has an internal cooldown of no greater then 16 seconds, likely 15 seconds. I think this is going to be the definitive timbral replacement. its the highest spell damage lowest cooldown found so far.

I'm using both Dying Curse and Embrace of the Spider currently, and they definitely proc off everything. Even changing zones, its quite amusing. Would definitely say they're both up every 45s, often together, which is pretty awesome.
Very interested in the Extract and Dragon Soul right now, they seem like real winners to me, considering that pair was very close to the best for aff in BC. |
Sorry, no numbers, but I originally used Mark of the War Prisoner and Forge Ember. On Monday, I was lucky enough to get the Extract of Necromatic Power and replaced my Forge Ember. The proc is very strange: It has the same animation as Shadow Bolt.
My next target is Darkmoon Card: Death. Due to the wording, I think it will be disgusting for Affliction. Any information on Darkmoon Card: Death is greatly appreciated. Can it crit? Does it get buffed by spell power? What's the internal cooldown? |

The datamined buff on wowhead lists the proc rate as 35%, so it seems safe to say it will have an internal cooldown, probably 15 seconds. If it follows similar effects in game, it will crit for 50% more damage and be affected by some debuffs like CoE, but not by spellpower. |
With such low damage on the proc when compared to similar trinkets (like Telluric Currents), the internal CD has to be a lot lower. I am very interested in that card, but I haven't seen ANY of the new cards this time around, and Wowhead has very little info, anyone know where to even start collecting for this?

I'm raiding with Embrace of the Spider, replaced it with The Skull of Gul'dan.
The only thing I'dd say might be negative about Embrace of the Spider is: It triggers off anything. With The Skull of Gul'dan you can atleast choose when to use your +haste buff. It sucks if Embrace of the Spider procs when you run out of fire after placing a dot ^^ Generally I personally prefer trinkets with a "Use" function rather than a "Equip" function. |
The cards for the new decks are made by the inscription profession. The mats required are currently hideously expensive, so expect the cards to be priced similarly.

Regarding [Item not found!]:
I tested the trinket as an affliction warlock during a 465 seconds Kel'Thuzad fight. These are the resulting numbers: 15 hits, 1077 average 4 crits, 1761 average 4 misses Total: 23213 damage over 465 seconds, 49.9 DPS The numbers yield a proc rate of about once every 20 seconds which confirms the expected 15 seconds internal cooldown. (With 5 dots ticking, the expected proc rate would be 18 seconds with a perfect dot upkeep. Of course, a perfect dot upkeep can only be approximated in a real-world fight that involves some movement.) The misses are due to +3% hit from talents not applying to the trinket. |
I understand [The Egg of Mortal Essence] procs off Fel Armor and the 2-piece T5 bonus, but have any warlocks tested to see if this procs off the heals your pet receives from Fel Synergy?

I'd still fully expect [The Egg of Mortal Essence] to get a correction nerf. I played with [Scarab of the Infinite Cycle] for several hours, and it didn't proc off any of them, not Fel Armor, not Fel Synergy, not 2pT5, not Drain Life, not Health Funnel, none of them, not even a single time. The current proc from the egg is the old proc from the Scarab, without a change at all, they created a new less powerful proc for the Scarab when LK released (still not shown on wowhead). So it seems clear the design intent is for it to be used on actual heals that are cast, not passive healing of any type.
