Why the Soul Shard changes?

Now that they've whacked the quivers and made ammo stack to 1000 with hunters, why would they [practically] require us to have a shard bag?

Even GC said something about the shards, making an assumption that all Locks have a shard bag.

Can anyone link me to a post or inform me why they haven't made the simple change of making Soul Shards stack? While I think making shards conjure off of drain soul ticks is a step in the right direction, it seems a bit ridiculous that we have to carry around a shard bag...

*edit* With all the quality of life changes to other classes, why make our lives more difficult?

It's already been stated that the change to drain soul is simply a bandaid until they can get the major overhaul of the shard system they have planned finished.

When I first heard about this change I didn’t understand it. However; after reading GC post it makes sense and I actually like it and appreciate it.

What I do is farm 32+2 shards before a raid –the extra 2 being for well and stone. Now that we will able to create shards that we need even on progression encounters –wipe nights- it would have been a hassle to delete those entire shard.

Actually you wont be able to farm the +2 shards after 3.1, as you can only have 32 shards - with the patch they'll maximize number of shards. Source
It does not solve any problem, it just speeds up shard generation (most of which you got on trash anyway).

It can serve as a bandaid - but shard stacking could have served that purpose aswell...

I can hardly imagine that on progress raids (especially demo/destro locks) will switch to DS when wipe is imminent... Or the purple rays will become a new "it's-a-wipe-abandon-ship" signal.

It's not as if we used a lot of shards currently anyway.
As an Affli lock, I use them for summons, soulstones and health stones.
So you use at worst for each try:
-1 shard for TP, say repairs etc.
-1 shard for a soulstone.
-1 shard for a soulwell.
-1 shard if using something other than imp.
-1 shard for aggro management. (could be 2 in longer fights)

I personaly really dislike the shard change. As affliction I never have more then 20 shards on me at anytime, and I dont want 32 slots being filled while running an instance with multiple bosses, to the point of constantly having to delete them. Looks like its time to find a mod that will do that for me. :\

I think the assumption (granted, I think this is a bad assumption) is that you're using the largest shard bag available. However it's confusing and aggravating to me that they're giving hunters back that bag slot in 3.1 but we have to wait for the eventual soul shard review.

What is the proc rate of the new Drain Soul? How many shards does it return during the typical execute?

The change to Drain Soul is not yet implemented into the PTR and therefor we have no data on it at the moment.

Updated my previous post (here) about pandemic to include the possible 200% crit modifier that Ghostcrawler hinted at here.

ForteXorcist (old name ForteWarlock) does it as well in the menu Shard Manager. No need to install a new addon if you already have that.

From my Pov, this new shard limit is the most stupid idea we never had to deal with.
I'm playing my warlock from the beginning of the game and I never needed anyone to manage my shards for me. Moreover, as Issa mentioned, they're are some ways to define one's own limit.

And what about bosses like Malygos (or maybe new ones we could face in a near or far future) with no trash at all before them.
Sure, we'll be able to make shards on the bosses trys themselves but none of us use DS before the 35% limit and unless ppl are starting to die very early in the fight, you can't know for sure that it will be a try and not a potential down.

For me, 32 is the warning saying : "hey beware you're starting to consume your permanent stock !".

Why the hell don't they just implement a stacking system with maybe a limit, but which could be tweaked by us, up to 40 or 50.
This 32 limit is absurd

Personally I agree that it is just silly. But when you look at it from Blizzards point of view, it is at least consistent. They want to change affliction because they don't like that you have to use an addon to make it playable, so they will certainly not like the idea that you need an addon to keep your bags clean. Destroying shards manually is an option but I would not call it pleasant.

If they want to make our lives easier, why not offer us the current add-on functionality from the normal UI, and make the number of shards or the bags they go into configurable. As for the SL removal removing my need for an add-on: they're dreaming. I go from 5xhaunt, 4xUA, 4xImm, 2xCoA, 2xSL per minute to the same rotation without SL, and suddenly I don't need an add-on anymore? I was watching 3 timers before; I'm still watching 3 timers. Even the removal of Imm wouldn't help in that regard.
